About Volunteering

Thank you for your interest in Thresholds in Delaware. Thresholds is a non-profit organization that teaches a decision making program to interested inmates in Delaware prisons. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any non-profit organization. Thresholds volunteers bring community involvement to the prison by helping inmates learn to make good decisions in their lives, resolving issues in a constructive manner.


Who can volunteer?

We are seeking caring individuals who can commit to meeting with a client for 1-2 hours each week for a period of 7 weeks. No previous experience or special education is needed. A background check and security orientation is required of all new volunteers. Volunteer Training is very thorough and we provide excellent teaching materials and support to assist you in your sessions.


Skills needed

  • a caring attitude towards the student

  • the ability to be comfortable with new people

  • the ability to explain and present lessons clearly

  • the ability to listen to the student with empathy

  • ability to provide support without judgement

  • a desire to help another person succeed in life

  • a willingness to bring the human element of caring to someone who is incarcerated


The Commitment Involved

  1. Training - 10 classes

  2. Weekly session with a client - 7 weeks

  3. Teaching and reviewing material with the client every session to ensure understanding
